PLATINUM: THE CHAMPIONS’ ADVANTAGE
I love platinum. And not simply for its exclusive status symbol. Rather, this precious metal – rare, and highly resistant to heat and chemical agents – is valuable, able to withstand pressure, and immune to external elements. This is why it’s used to coat spacecraft and missile nose cones that must operate reliably for long periods of time at high temperatures: it prevents them from disintegrating in the atmosphere.
In your career, business, or pursuits, are you platinum-coated to withstand external elements and the heat of life’s vicissitudes, or do you come undone in highly pressurized situations?
The world’s best athletes are wrestling with such high pressure challenges at the London Olympics this month. Despite their countless years of training, we’ve witnessed expected winners lose advantage, the gold or even a place on the podium because of their slightest drop in concentration. Superior physical and mental conditioning is not enough. To be the best among their elite peers, Olympic athletes must aim beyond – i.e., to a why? that is greater than themselves. Platinum is rare and precious.
Platinum requires deep-seated self-belief. Self-belief goes beyond the rational mind and logic. Self-belief is the conviction that you are in the right place at the right time, and that no one else can do what you do, the way that you do it, because you are the best at whatever your art happens to be. Platinum is the pressure-resistant shield that protects you both from within and without.
Here are two things that you can immediately do to boost your self-belief:
- Take a CAT scan of your motivation to find your ultimate why.
- Identify what it will take for you to claim that you can and will win. Then act on it!
Let your self-belief lead you. When the heart drives, the body and mind follow.Success is the consequence. This is platinum performance – the champions’ advantage.
An Effective and Efficient Way to Handle Fear ~
One of my entrepreneur clients recently complained that he felt stressed, tired, and anxious, and that he only slept 4 hours a day. Increasing tension afflicted his family relationships. He suffered from fear of losing money on a deal that he envisaged would secure his positive cash-flow in 2013.
An effective way to handle this fear is to use an iterative process in which you identify a series of instances where you have “already experienced” your current fear, then recalling how your fear and the actions you took for each one resulted in benefits for you.
In this entrepreneur’s case, we pinpointed a financial crisis one year ago. Next, we counter-intuitively listed the ways in which his fear of losing money and his actions during that period had benefited him or served him well. We then identified the crisis prior to that. Again, he discovered twenty benefits resulting from that zero hour. We repeated the process two more times with his ability to spot ‘glorious gains’ improving each time.
In as much as an hour, here are just a few outcomes the entrepreneur experienced:
- He became cognizant of his track record in overcoming financial challenges, thereby increasing his confidence that no one was better equipped than him to handle his situation;
- His self-appreciation soared as he realized that each crisis was the basis of his financial growth as well as the value he provided as a leader in his industry.
- He accepted fear, a common outcome of this process, as a formidable ally and extreme driving factor in his success.
His shift in perception released enormous amounts of tension causing his body and head to feel lighter. He reported that the anxiety and stress were gone, and he subsequently regained focus, concentration, and control of his life.
This process, which requires time but no other resources, has a huge return on investment. If fear of losing money is keeping you awake at night, I invite you to try it yourself. Let me know how this technique transforms your mindset! To join forces in overcoming this and/or other fears, access myOn-Calloffer in the sidebar or click here.

Q: How do you know when you’ve “missed the train” and it’s too late to switch careers?
A: Firstly, no station was ever built for one train. Secondly, if this is what you hear–you’re frequenting the wrong crowd! Rather than getting on a train to AnyLand, select the one to yourdesired destinationeven if you must wait longer than anticipated. Besides most talented people have at least two careers and skills sets are “transferable.” The key is to not permit anyone to condition your beliefs or tell you, what you can or cannot do.
For example, in 1989, I moved to Rome and was told by nearly every Italian I met that I couldn’t get a job unless I had connections. However, that was not part of my vision! In fact, starting in a recession and for 12 subsequent years, I enjoyed an exciting corporate career working with three of the world’s most renown multinational organizations. The one with the most certitude wins.
