THE MYTH OF WORK – LIFE BALANCE

I realized years ago that I didn’t have a work life, a family life, and a social life–I have one life. And what I do in one area affects the rest. Yet there’s a common and recurring tendency to compartmen-talize human existence. The belief that you must perform to 100% capacity in every area, and give equal importance to each is symptomatic and preposterous. Then you wonder why you feel fragmented, running on empty, and unfulfilled.

The reality is that life is one indivisible whole and you have a total daily energy allowance (TDEA) of 100%. How you apportion this allowance, in relation to your core values, determines whether you’re thriving or surviving.

If you opt to thrive:

  • Accept that life is one–not many–and that work, fun, and repose are integral parts of the whole.
  • When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. What’s most important to You Focus on best and leave the rest.
  • Remember that quality time with loved ones and downtime is the source of your strength. Without a solid foundation and recreation, you cannot create repeatedly.

Bottom line: Read my quote!

CASE STUDY

How to ‘Find’ More Hours in Your Day~

I worked with an IT manager who complained that there simply weren’t enough hours in the day to develop new leads, coordinate delivery, coach his staff, and so on. He accepted to keep a detailed log for two weeks.

Here’s what we eliminated on a weekly basis after we reviewed his log: unwarranted meetings and conference call attendance (4 hours); revising and rewording documents instead of using the original (4 hours); micro-managing direct reports instead of empowering them (3 hours); social media posting and browsing (2 hours); useless upgrades and apps (1 hour).

That’s right: 14 hours a week. Examine what you do. Free up almost two complete working days. You’ll find time left to play.

ASK ANGIE

If you could ask a question about what’s holding you back from catapulting your life forward, what would it be? To ask yours, click on the link below.

Q. I have a rolodex of opportunities and don’t know which to pursue. How can I know with utmost certainty *what I want to do* with my life?

A. Put the rolodex away. There’s only one way to find out: discover purpose. Purpose infuses your life with direction, meaning, and the motivation to jump out of bed at dawn and start a new day. It’s your raison d’etre, your reason for living. It activates the inner force and outer drive to resist, insist, persist and succeed in your singular pursuit.

To find your Why start with the end-in-mind. What three or four questions will you ask yourself by the end of your lifetime, e.g. “Did I live” “Did I love” “Did I learn” “Did I do work that matters?” Define metrics for your success. You’ll know that you know your purpose when you cease to question. Then, whoyou are, whatyou do, andwhyyou do it becomes your empowered choice & living legacy.

Send me your questions. Although I can’t promise to reply to each one individually, you may see yours featured here in an upcoming issue!
